Explore the journey behind our retreat and the philosophy that guides every rider, horse, and experience.
Kultarannan Talli is a small stables nestled between river and forest, where every horse is deeply cared for. The stables offer carriage rides, trail rides, and summer camps for children. But two years ago when Eva, a professional horseback archery coach, joined Kultarannan Talli and introduced this ancient discipline, we all instantly fell in love. As Emilie shared the team's progress on social media, interest grew, and requests poured in from people eager to try this unique sport. That’s how the idea of the horseback archery retreat was born: a space to share this passion, skill, and joy with others.
Everyone moves at their own pace. We always listen to the horse and to what we feel capable of, and wings grow naturally from there. Horses are at the center of everything we do, and we deeply respect their rhythm and hearts. Our trusted Irish Cobs bring reliability, varied temperaments, and unique characters to each ride. During the retreat, you’ll get to experience riding different horses, learning to adapt and connect with each one.
Over the week, you will learn to shoot both from the ground and horseback. Most riders manage to hit the target in canter during their very first mounted session, it’s not as hard as it looks! As the days progress, Eva will introduce nuances of posture, breathing, balance, and technique, helping every rider reach those “aha!” moments. You’ll explore a variety of shooting styles, all within a small, supportive group of 6–8 riders, ensuring personalised coaching and attention throughout. When shooting from the ground, all participants can shoot at the same time. However, during horseback shooting, riders take turns. This allows the horses to rest and gives participants the opportunity to observe others, learn from watching, and improve their technique.

The foundational mounted archery shot, taken perpendicular to the horse’s movement, allowing the rider to focus on rhythm, timing, and alignment with the target.

While approaching the target, the rider shoots forward before passing it and then rotates to shoot behind, developing timing, balance, and fluid coordination with the horse’s movement.

A shot aimed at a target placed on the ground, testing precision, control, and focus while riding past at speed.

A shot performed from the non-dominant side, developing ambidexterity, body awareness, and equal control on both sides of the horse.
“Horseback archery gives you lots of different hormones, but also so much satisfaction when you hit the target and when you really connect with your horse. The best part of horseback archery is definitely the speed, hitting the bullseye, and working together with the horse. Horseback archery also gives you a “time out” from everything else. You just need to focus, trust yourself and your horse, and shoot.
Ground shooting is the best way to learn and practice shooting, but on horseback you can really feel the connection with your body, your bow, and your horse. And that’s an amazing feeling.”
While horseback archery is the heart of the retreat, Lapland offers a variety of unforgettable experiences beyond the saddle.
Arriving in late July, you’ll witness the unique “nightless nights,” when the sun barely dips below the horizon. The soft, glowing light creates a magical atmosphere for evening trail rides, letting you experience the Arctic wilderness in a completely different way.
The cottage features a sauna which is a central of Finnish traditions. After a day of riding and archery, you’ll have the possibility to immerse yourself in this age-old ritual, alternating between the soothing heat of the sauna and the cool refreshment of a river swim. This practice awakens both body and mind: it relaxes muscles, improves circulation, clears the senses, and creates a feeling of deep calm and focus. It’s not just a physical detox, but a moment to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself and others in the serenity of Lapland.
There will also be time for leisure and exploration. You may choose to visit the famous Santa Claus Village to browse souvenirs, enjoy local treats, or maybe you prefer to arrange an extra horse trail ride or simply relax at the cottage.
